After the meeting
"Man, this really hits the spot," Lucas sighs happily. He lifts his cup in greeting when Ianto draws in closer.

"It's always good to know one's hard work is appreciated." he declares, a barely there roll of his 'R's present in the crisp Welsh accent as he offers the young man his hand. "Ianto Jones, assistant to Miss Leeds and, as I have been called more than once, coffee snob. So glad you're enjoying that, sir."
no subject
"Assistant to Miss Leeds?" Lucas asks with eyebrows raised, giving Ianto's hand a brisk shake. He's pretty sure he noticed the guy at the turnip festival, thinking he was one of the other newcomers. maybe he was wrong? "That's a pretty important gig, yeah?"

He liked her, and she'd swiftly become someone that was part of his life now. His, and by that virtue, vital.
"Truthfully, I'd no idea who she was going in, and I didn't find out until she'd offered me the job." he confesses with a rueful little chuckle after shaking Lucas's hand. "And a job is all it is, really--she's a fine woman with a sharp mind, and I respect her as such. Can't really afford to stand in awe of one's boss when working as a personal assistant. Too often, I must be stern and flagrantly insubordinate to ensure certain matters are attended, such as food and sleep. It's the way of academics, they do forget the incidentals."

"So you had no idea she's like a big shot around here? You wake up here recently, from another place, too?" He can't help but ask. It feels weird asking, but he's still trying to sort out who's a villager and who's a newbie like him.

"Yeah, same here. Also not the weirdest thing to happen to me either, but this kind of investigation is right up my alley." Not that he's the best at it, still considered a greenhorn by his branch Chief.
"Lucas Kovach," He says by way of introduction, "Supernatural investigator and, uh...Medium." He tacks on the last bit, slowly losing some of his initial hesitancy in revealing that straight away. "How about you?"
no subject
"I work for the government back home. Off books...er, think you Americans might call it 'black ops?' Torchwood, except what we deal with is strictly extraterrestrial in nature."
He pauses, shrugging though something dark slides through his features.
"Give or take the odd ancient demon locked beneath a rift in time and space beneath a major city in Wales."
no subject
"Woah, that sounds like some Men in Black shit." He's impressed! And slightly weirded out.
"What! You can't say that and not follow through with the story, man!"
no subject
"Cardiff--where I'm from. There's a rift in time and space running through it." he explains. "Turns out, someone locked this big horned wanker named Abaddon beneath it, and...me 'n my mates got tricked into opening the damn thing to set him loose on the city. Our...boss stopped it."
Ianto's voice catches on the word, and all of the things he has buried inside of it.
Boss. Friend. Lover...beloved.
Jack...

And after that doozy of a tale, he gives a low whistle. "Yeesh, you weren't kidding. I bet that took a bit of work, huh?"
Although the way that Ianto says boss tugs at Lucas. There's a deeper meaning there that he won't guess at, only know that it lurks. "And now you end up here like it's another Tuesday. Life's funny like that, right?"
