WELCOME POTLUCK

Greetings, residents! Those more observant sorts among you may have noticed a large influx of very crowded ferries. In order to welcome our new residents en masse, Town Hall is holding a potluck in Town Square. Please bring a dish if you are able and make a new friend!

All of our newest arrivals need only bring themselves. We look forward to welcoming you all into our community, and may your lanterns always be lit.

This event is open to all! In light of our new influx of prospective players following the Great Sail Migration, we've decided to offer a small public event to tide everyone over until the TDM this weekend.

"Yeah, that'd make more sense," Snakes says. "Some of those Pokemon were pretty out there. Nearly got creamed by a ticked-off sand castle once."

"Yeah, almost tripped over a little white coral guy myself down by the water and ended up getting a couple bruises over it because it probably thought I kicked it on purpose."

"So much for animals bein' able to tell when it's on purpose or not," Snakes grunts. "Don't think I saw any white coral ones. Probably just as well."

Sam shrugs. "I mean, it got over it after I tried to explain it was underfoot and fed it some'a the canned stuff I had on me. Anyway I think I just fuckin' attract sea creatures and nomadic types. Seems thematic."

"Well, that's good, at least. Why do you think you attract sea creatures, though?" Snakes wonders. "You got some connection to the sea?"

Sam finally opts to climb down from his perch, letting himself down hanging by his hands, grabbing his pack, then letting himself drop the rest of the way to straighten up in front of Snakes.

"Uh...kinda? It's a long story." And he is very well aware that it's a fucking weird one.

Snakes shrugs. "Eh. You can tell me or not. I won't pry." He just folds his arms and stands there.

Sam's hands disappear into his pockets at the same time. "Short answer, death, purgatory, the Seam, the ocean, it's all fuckin' connected. I die, I end up in the water. Eventually I come back."

Okay, now Snakes is definitely confused. "The Seam? And you sound like you're saying you've died before the time when you ended up here."

"Yeah that's more of that 'long story's," Sam mutters, shrugging a shoulder. "Seam's the place between life n' death. And I got this thing that doesn't let me die. Haven't died here yet, but before all this I managed to fall down a mountain, get shot a couple times, slip into a crevasse...been caught in three voidouts now."

"That all sounds like a real drag," Snakes says. "But if you can't die for real back home, what'd they even bring you here for? I thought that was if coming here was the only way to get another chance."

"Between you n' me, I'm thinking it's like the spiritual form of a clerical error. I got stuck in the system and shunted out the wrong spot in reality."

Snakes smirks a bit darkly. "Works for me. Sounds like the kind of thing that happens in life all the time. Who's to say the afterlife is always in perfect order?"

Maybe it was and maybe it wasn't. He didn't know either way and would really rather not find out any time soon either.

"Ain't there some mythology about Hades just bein' the bookkeeper of hell? Death n' taxes all subject to the same bureaucratic rig'marole. Guys like me fall through the cracks. Guess it applies to you all too."

"Couldn't prove it by me, pal. I ain't much into mythology," Snakes drawls. "But it sounds like how it'd probably be. I always fell through the cracks in life. Figures I would in death too."

Kind of nice, to have a grumbly sort of conversation with a guy that sounds like he's been in the same boat for a while. "What're you doin' out here anyway? Not much on the party gig?"

Snakes shrugs. "I'll be goin' back in a bit. Just wanted to patrol around, make sure nothing's going to ruin the party. But something probably will anyway, with our track record. Not much anyone can do to stop it."

"Wouldn't be surprised, after every other fuckin' thing," he mutters, casting a glance back toward the crowd around the tables. "Demons, earthquakes, people disappearing n' comin' back changed? How're we supposed to prep for it?"

"Darned if I know," Snakes says. "But there should be a way. We can't just go on like this forever!"

"Best we can do is make sure we look out for ourselves. Not like the local guard's all that inclined to help. You heard about what happened with the kid and the jersey devil out there? Apparently the cops didn't even bat an eye, said they'd just ask the guy when he came back. Had the dude that reported it to them in the first place mad as hell." Sam shakes his head. "This ain't tenable. Something's gotta give and I've been tired of being jerked around for a long damn time."

Snakes snarls in frustration. "That don't surprise me. The locals don't seem to bat an eye at all the deaths and they just expect everybody else to sit and take it too. I've been trying to change things, but I haven't had much success. That's why I patrol so much. Trying to do whatever I can to make it safer."

Sam's nose wrinkles and his lip curls. "Best I can do is what I've always done, make sure everyone's supplied, run messages when they need me to, and take care of my kid the best I can. If anything happens to her, I'll kill whatever did it and make sure it don't come back."

"Those are important things to do ... you've got a kid?" Snakes blinks.

"Yeah, name's Lou. I left 'er back at the party with one'a the people that watches her when I can't take 'er with me. Don't want 'er out here in the woods just lately," he explains.

So how'd a kid end up here?

[The obvious answer is that she died to get here, but he's wondering if it happened some other way. It's disturbing to think of kids being brought to this place....]
