[OPEN, Mingle] Yamsgiving

Who: Cecil and EVERYONE
What: Another Harvest Celebration
When: Beginning of Pumpkinfest
Where: Center of town
Warning(s): Discussion of the Gala and its attendant CWs may come up

1. Yes, we're happy as fish [Food Prep, Oak and Iron kitchen]
Cecil's made a point of seeking out the best known chefs in town to help him put everything together for this meal. While sweet potato dishes are the star, at least one available with every course, he's hoping to hit a broad variety so everyone can find something they like. He, of course, is peeling and chopping his eternal sweet potato to make sure there's enough to go around.

(Of course you don't need to worry about him with a knife! He's fine! Don't you know he was once a boy scout?)

If someone needs an extra hand for their dishes, though, he's happy to lend one. There's an attitude of camaraderie and cheer in the room, with Cecil even breaking out singing at one or two points in the evening.

2. And gorgeous as geese [The Meal; Festival Green]
Everyone's invited to the feast. That is, in fact, the whole point. Cecil's always been pointedly neutral in the town's tensions, working as the most unbiased media monkey he can. He's the Voice of Pumpkin Hollow, and that means not taking sides between Dahlia and Neil and the Temple and whoever else. But after the gala, he's made a choice to act, to try to foster goodwill and warm feelings. This isn't the stone stew he offered during January's famine, this is a Redwall-style feast.

So, between glasses of mead from Kasprak Farm and dandelion wine, everyone is invited to fill their plate with candied yams and zucchini bread, roast chicken and venison donated by one of the Enforcers. There's a homemade cranberry sauce with citrus wedges and dandelion-leaf salad with an apple cider vinaigrette and toasted acorns for garnish. There's pasta with a homemade pesto sauce and cheese. Desserts, too, are plentiful, some even flavored with...chocolate. But many are not, and feature sweet potatoes. Muffins, pies, etc.

Find a table with a friend or a stranger, and indulge. This is a warm-fuzzy type thing--feel free to use it as a mingle.

3. And wonderfully clean in the morning [Cleanup; Also Festival Green]
Cecil is, quite honestly, expecting to be the only person to stay and clean up. He's been up since about five in the morning and he's dragging a bit at this point. Oh, he did take the time to eat, so he's not starving, but like. He could use help putting the Green back to rights.

4. We've got everything, we're growing everything [Cecil Wildcards]
[You know how to find me to plot.]

Rey's seen environmental suits before, but she must admit she's never seen them in purple before. Maybe purple means something important to their people? But what really amazes her is that they're willing to open it enough to have their fill of food.

And she felt her cheeks heat in a blush. "...what're those? Other than birds, I know you can eat birds, but the ones on Jakku were always too skinny and gamey to be worth it."

"Yeah, they're both birds. Edible meat and eggs. Geese live by the water and I think they migrate? Chickens are domesticated and mostly live on farms, and they're flightless." They're a bit more familiar with chickens, and running up against the limits of their knowledge of geese.

Jakku isn't a celestial body Purple's heard of, but that's not remotely surprising since even before they started meeting people from other universes they didn't know the name of every world with a spaceport. "Climate must have been harsh there."

"Geese sound kind of like Porgs, but the Porgs are pretty small and, uh. Cute? I mean, I'd eat one if I had to, but I'd be a little sad about it," Rey said thoughtfully. She knew what it was like to go after the option of last resort, though thankfully she hadn't had to on Ahch-To.

Rey's look turned far away for a moment. "Yeah. It is. Blazing hot by days, freezing at night, and sand everywhere." She wondered if what Kylo Ren said about her parents was right. She knew what he described often happened there.

They shrug. "I've eaten Tulip Snakes, and they're cute. And small. Honestly not much of a meal but they're easy to catch. I don't know Porgs, at least not by that name. They're kind of like geese?"

Might be a localised species that didn't thrive in the typical terraformed ecosystem or in cities. The scanner would have pointed them out if they lived on the shores of Vow, March, or especially Adamance. Or, well, the creatures might be from another universe rather than just another planetoid. Gotta remember that that's a possibility.

"Sounds a bit like Offense. Ah— 21-Offense, it's a broken-off piece of a moon that got hit by a meteor something like eight hundred years ago. I had to go there for work. There used to be a bunch of munitions factories and mines there." Purple puts another piece of meat into their helmet window. "Which makes it sound like it's lifeless now, but there's a few animals that were too mean to die."

Rey blinked in surprise. "Tulip Snakes? Can't say I've heard of those, either. Do they live here? And, hmm. From the look of the geese, not really. They're both birds, but Porgs have huge dark eyes, pretty feathers, little flappy wings, and skinny legs. It's the eyes that make me feel sorry for them, they're very...I don't know how to put it, really. They kind of make me sad," she said with a shrug. Between the eyes and their chirps, they always seemed sad?

She's well accustomed to the idea of there being hundreds of thousands of planets with lifeforms, but she doesn't remember anything other than Jakku until she found BB-8 and later Finn. She knows she had to have been on that shuttle she saw taking off, but she doesn't remember a thing about its insides. Or whoever was piloting it.

"Reminds me of Hays Minor, too. It used to be beautiful, at least that's what I've heard, but then the First Order started weapons testing and mining on it. By the time I'm from, it's in ruins. Except for the animals like the ones you mentioned, the ones who are to ornery to die."

Everyone had heard about what was done to Hays Minor with the not so subtle implication that the same would be done to other populated worlds if they stepped a toe out of line. Of course, after the Hosnian system...if Starkiller Base could be built once, who said it couldn't be built twice?

"Not that I've noticed, but around here the chances of any random animal from some other world showing up are low but never zero. And the climate's not completely wrong for them. They're green lizards with colorful flaps on their heads and wings. They also like to pick people up and carry them around, even though they're only about this long–" They hold their hands about half a meter apart. "–so if you see a little green flying thing and you're wondering, 'Is that a Tulip Snake,' if it jumps onto your head that'll help clear things up."

They listen to the description of a Porg. "Aww. I've heard that baby dogs have eyes like that, but I've never seen one in person. Sounds cute though."

Purple doesn't recognise the names Hays Minor or First Order, but they've heard enough similar stories that a new one isn't shocking. Some corporation buys a planetoid, snatches up its most valuable resources, then uses it for target practice or a dumping ground now that nobody else wants it? That's half the moons their last job sent them to. "It sucks, doesn't it? How they can just go 'oh, there's more where that came from, no big deal'."

"Never zero? What about...people from home?" Rey wanted to make sure Finn was okay. She knew how badly he was hurt, but surely the bacta containment suit he was in would heal him, wouldn't it? She didn't know what she'd do if it didn't. She also didn't know how to explain her deal with Kylo Ren, but maybe she could get around talking about that. And the description of the Tulip Snakes makes her smile. "They sound cute. Really. I've been around lizards, but never ones like that. Can they be tamed as pets?"

"What's a dog," Rey asked curiously.

It wouldn't be as bad if it were only a corporation. No, the First Order was built and designed to take over every planet possible and she...was in the middle of it. "That's....yeah. That's how they think. Or thought, I don't know what's going to happen since the former Supreme Leader is half the being he once was." Morbid, but still kind of funny.

"Oh, yeah, that happens all the time. Two of my coworkers knew each other in their world." Purple isn't sure if Link and Zelda were already dating or not at that point, but they definitely didn't meet here. "If you're worried about somebody you know, though, not sure if showing up here would be a good sign. That'd mean they died, or almost died. I think this is some kind of afterlife. Or it's where we go instead of the afterlife. But hey, almost died is still a possibility. It's the option I'd recommend."

They tried it themselves, and then ended up here again anyways. Maybe they were still only almost dead when the woman in the black spacesuit found them the second time, but it's not as if they could have caught enough food or dragged themselves away from one of Adamance's flash floods as a leaky heap of semiconscious agony.

"I fed some of them and it got them to stop dumping me down hillsides. People don't usually keep them as pets, probably because they'll pick up all your furniture and fly around with it. Or your neighbor's furniture. But I think they've got potential." A Snare Flea leg for each of them when they set Purple down gently, and the lizards weren't such a dangerous nuisance anymore. It probably wouldn't be possible to eliminate all the nuisanceness and keep them in a little terrarium in an apartment or a house like the ones on the island, but maybe a dedicated animal lover who lived in the middle of nowhere could work something out.

"There's a couple other species called dogs but I was thinking of the domestic ones. An Earth mammal, with fur and a long nose and big ears and four legs and a tail. Good sense of smell, easy to train, incredibly popular as pets and working animals so they got brought along to every world Earth terraformed..." Brought to some internal realisation, they point at Rey. "We have to be from different universes. Or completely different time periods, maybe. Anywhere with a lot of humans has dogs, even some of the space stations. If you had dogs in your universe you'd know it."

"Like cut in half?" They make a scissor gesture with their index and middle fingers.

"Oh. Huh. Last thing I remember back home was something hitting the Supremacy. I think...I lost consciousness? I could've almost died, the hit seemed bad enough." That would mean there was a solid chance that Kylo Ren would eventually join her. Not Ben Solo, not after he chose power. Even though she'd gotten him to call off the attack in exchange for her staying.

Rey couldn't help wondering what everyone back home would think of her bargain. Would they see it as what she meant it to be, a way to keep them safe, at least for a while, or would they call her a traitor?

But the description of the way the Tulip Snakes would behave made her chuckle. "They sound like a handful! But maybe in a funny way, as long as you don't mind explaining to your neighbors why it took off with their furniture?" She'd never had anything close to a pet before. The closest she had were the pitiful little blooms she'd tried to keep alive on Jakku.

The description of dogs made her cock her head to one side slightly, trying to imagine what an animal like that would look like. She wasn't sure she was doing a very good job of it because nothing she'd been near was anything like the description. "Maybe...different galaxies? Have you ever heard of Coruscant?" Everyone back home had heard of Coruscant, for good or for bad.

"Sounds like that'd do it," Purple says with an agreeable shrug. You never know what you're going to get when you hit a human in the head. Sometimes they immediately die and sometimes they just get mad, even if the injury didn't seem proportionate to the results. "Was the Supreme Leader on the Supremacy? I'm picking up on a theme here."

"It would be funny. You'd need trees for them to live in and bugs to feed them, but it could work. Honestly I've never had the chance to annoy my neighbors with a pet before, I had to travel too much for work." And they didn't have neighbors on Adamance, except for the wandering monsters.

They think, tilting their helmeted head. "It's not a familiar name. I take it it's a big deal?"

"Yeah. I've broken bones or dislocated things before, but that hit felt worse than all of them." She'd swear that her head made a cracking sound as she hit the deck. "Um. Yes. Both the current and past. The, ah, current had just gotten a promotion." Which was probably the best way to describe what happened to Snoke. The full story would only lead to too many questions.

"Trees," Rey said wistfully. She loved trees, at least the trees she'd seen on Takodana and Ahch-To, even if the ones on Ahch-To had been awful little spindly things. "What do you do for work?" She knew there were jobs, but she hadn't picked one yet.

"One of the biggest. It's a planet-wide city, the capital of the Old Republic." Likeliest in the running for capital of whatever sorted itself out after the destruction of the First Order, too, since obviously Hosnia Prime wasn't in the running for anything.

From the comment she made about half the being he once was, they think they get the gist of how that position ended up with a vacancy. "Surprised they didn't name themselves the Supreme Order. Sounds like they're more interested in throwing their weight around than coming up with names."

"Here? Fishing. No experience required, I've worked a few different jobs but most of them were on the wrong kind of ship to have anything to do with fish." The Mipha's Grace might be the smallest outfit they've ever worked for, too. Weird to think that their captain, their coworker hauling in the crab traps, and the owner of the whole operation is the same person.

"Okay, now I know I haven't heard of it, because that sounds memorable." The kind of place that would either have the biggest tourist industry in the galaxy or entire sedimentary layers of garbage. Maybe both. "I don't know what republic you mean, either. My galaxy's got the Republic of This or the Republic of That, but they're not the kind of place where you can just say The Republic and people will know what you mean. You might still be right about it being two different galaxies in the same universe, though. Getting to the next galaxy over would take a looooooong time where I come from."

If it helps, it came as a complete surprise to Snoke. Rey didn't know what the giant being was thinking, only that he was certain Kylo Ren was about to kill her, not him. From the shocked look on his face when Kylo activated his grandfather's lightsaber, it had been a complete surprise. "Yeah, the name doesn't really make sense when you think about it. There have been loads of orders, but they usually called themselves empires. You'd think they'd stick with the brand."

"Wrong kind of ship? Fish need water, is there a lot of water here? And can we try to learn how to swim in it?" The idea of water just being there, no special circumstances, was still a heady one. She didn't know what she'd want to do with it first, the learning to swim or simply splashing around while standing in it because she could.

"I've never actually been there. Jakku is technically a Core World, but it's really nothing like them." But from what she'd heard about it, his assumption would be right. A layer of crime and dirt and disease and poverty, with one slightly less so over that and on and on until they reached the skyscrapers above the clouds where only the obscenely wealthy lived. "And I dunno how to put it. It's the New Republic. But it's kind of had a few problems recently." And Rey thought about travelling to another galaxy a moment. "Yeah, wouldn't work where I'm from, either. No hyperlanes to make sure you didn't crash into something."
