September Mini - Ghost of the Past

GHOSTS
OF
THE
PAST
The Visitor's Center
Just where the sands of Tawny Beach begin to fade into soil, grass, and cobbled roads, there is a new building. Much like the House of Cards, it seems to have appeared from nowhere overnight. A large and round structure of tastefully stacked stone, it seems to fit perfectly in between the town and the marina, with an exterior door facing each side and at both entrances. It reads, "VISITOR'S CENTER," in bold letters.

In mailboxes throughout town, there are flyers, advertising "offworlder visitation" running from September 6th to 19th. "Make appointment today!" it advertises cheerfully.

Regardless of which side you enter, the same receptionist sits at the desk on either side--- a pretty-faced young man with braided black hair, wearing dozens of pieces of delicate golden jewelry. He is working hard on some sort of paperwork or taking some phone call when you come in, but he quickly sets it aside to welcome you. "Hello! Welcome to the visitor's center! Would you like to make an appointment?"

Your host artfully dances around questions regarding the place, its abrupt construction, its purpose, and what your appointment actually entails, assuring you it's "self-explanatory." He'll gladly inform you that "people you know" are here for a visit, but won't say who or why or for how long. But you'll sign up for your appointment anyway, for one reason or another. Perhaps you don't even really know.

At the time of your appointment, you are sat down in a tasteful meeting space of your choosing (the options are listed below) and your guest is brought in. But it is not who you expect. In fact, in all likelihood, you do not know this person at all. But don't worry, they've been briefed, and they'll pass the information along to you if asked.

You see, you are not here to meet someone from your own past, at least not at first---- you're here to meet someone close to one of your friends or neighbors. And they're here to speak about that person to you.

Take as long as you need. The Visitor's Center does not close.
How It Works

Visitors.
Each offworlder on the island can have up to 2 "ghosts of their past." This is not meant to be literal, as these so-called ghosts will generally be no more dead than any other offworlder. Your ghost can be anyone who "haunts" you in some way, which can mean whatever makes sense to you. It does not necessarily need to be someone with a negative opinion of you--- it can be someone who loves you very much! This person can be from any point in your timeline, including after the incident that brought you to Pumpkin Hollow. It can also be a past version of yourself. Regardless, your own visitor is not actually the person you are here to meet. Your visitor will be meeting with one of your friends or loved ones from the island, and you will be meeting with someone else's "ghost."

When speaking to a "ghost", you will notice a few things about them. The first is that they do have a sense of where they are and what they're doing---- they know that they're here temporarily, and that they've been asked to speak about or on behalf of someone they know. They're aware of who the person is that they've come to speak about as well, and they seem to have all of their memories intact aside from being a little fuzzy on the actual process of getting here. The second is that in most cases, they seem to have regular needs like any living person. The upper floors of the visitor's center have hostel-like sleeping areas, bathrooms, a cafe, everything a person might need. The third is that they seem to be weirdly forthcoming when asked questions. Perhaps you're not familiar enough with the individual to notice such things at first, but it becomes evident that they're pretty open about the person they're there to speak about even when they don't seem to want to be.

Want to speak to your own visitor? That can be arranged--- but your ghost must speak to someone else first. But not to worry, there's plenty of time. (Despite the IC dates, OOCly this can be backtagged as long as desired!)

Locations.
There are plenty of places to meet with visitors within the Visitor's Center. If you'd prefer a more public meeting space, some lounge areas have been set up on the beach, or the cafe or recreation area within the center are all available. The beach meeting spaces consist of clusters of folding beach chairs or picnic blankets, and while swimming season is largely over, the view from the beach continues to be stunning this month. The cafe is a quaint bistro on the rooftop of the center with a round serving station in the middle and outdoor tables around the outer walls, which feels both spacious and intimate at the same time somehow. And the recreation room is an interior space on the second floor full of spaces for communal games, some of which are too modern to be there. (Not electronics, but definitely Cards Against Humanity.)

If you'd prefer a more private space, there are a number of tasteful meeting rooms, including those with tables as if for a more formal meeting or those with couches or chairs. One of the latter sort even has a fireplace!

However, visitors are not able to go further afield than the beach. If they attempt to go into town, their feet will plant themselves firmly to the ground outside. They will not be able to be pushed or lifted to get around this, and anyone who attempts to force it will be summarily accosted by the staff and their appointment will end immediately. They may not be eligible for another.

Rules.
As far as OOC rules go, there are a few perks and limitations worth knowing. Any "ghosts" that you write are eligible for AC bonuses for the characters they are attached to. If you are writing a ghost for another player's character, you may decide where the AC bonus goes, but please make a note on your activity check indicating what you're doing. You may write your ghost from your existing journal (with or without a unique icon for that ghost, just as long as you make it clear), or create an independent journal for the character. As mentioned before, you can absolutely play a ghost for someone else. If you would like to have a non-member friend drop by to play your ghost, you may absolutely do so if you clear it with a mod, preferably by having said friend send the mod journal a PM. Be aware that if you recruit an outside player to write a ghost for you, you are responsible for their behavior, and any AC-length threads on their end will not be eligible for transfer because that will just kill Drake probably.

Characters appearing from Ghosts of the Past can also appear in the Villain's Lounge or be apped in later as permanent characters (but not both, as the two are mutually exclusive) and will have some unique lore from entering the game this way!

Ghosts are not capable of lying and will generally feel more compelled to be forthcoming when speaking to anyone OTHER than the person they're here to represent. However, they cannot be forced to meet with anyone they do not want to see or to answer questions they adamantly do not wish to answer. The compulsions are relatively subtle. They also do not have to volunteer information they weren't asked for if they don't want to. None of these compulsions are present if they speak to the person they are there to see. Their memories are generally accurate to whatever point you bring them from, meaning that they can be whatever you want.

If you're visiting with your own ghost, please be aware that threads between two characters played by the same person are never eligible for AC and this is still the case in this instance.

Staff.
Last but not least, there's a chance that you may encounter the staff of the Visitor's Center around. There are two men and two women--- Daanon, Caspian, Reyelle, and Nephera, respectively. Those here in February may recognize them from Merrymeet. They look fairly normal, generally appearing as humans (or an elf, in Nephera's case), but in reality they are the members of the Court of Betrayal. Whenever they speak about their "Manager," they are referring to Eligos. However, this is not immediately obvious, especially to those not familiar with these particular demons. If you know, you know! [ I will be keeping my demon thread load super light, so please feel free to handwave interactions with them as you see fit! If you want a demon thread, please reach out to me for plotting. -Rose ]

"Oh--- yeah, we can--- we can go home, I didn't have anything else today." Martin furrows his brow, and stands. "Let's go."

There's an immediate relief, his tense shoulders dropping nearly a full inch as he stands. Shame about the tea, he'll just have to make Martin some once they're home.

He's quick to lead them down the stairs, and he's clearly in a marked hurry to clear out of the entrance area, only dropping from his sharp, rushed steps the second they're out the door. Once they are, fractures start appearing in his composure. His mostly blank expression pulls into a frown, soft yet so very troubled.

As soon as Martin's close enough, he takes his hand softly, and sets them back towards home. He doesn't know what to say. It's clear he wants to say something, but his words fail him so severely, the walk begins in silence.

Martin holds Jon's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze and walking a little closer beside him. "...Something happened." It's not a question.

"Yes."

Jon's answer is simple, yet his throat is still tight around it. He gives a squeeze in return, though; the small gesture is like a signal light. He's still present, and he signals back, even if he feels so far away.

The admission weighs almost too heavily on his tongue, but he shoves it out, utterly graceless in pushing the information away from his mind.

"...I killed a man in the Visitor's Center, Martin."

"Jesus Christ," Martin mutters. He frowns deeply, his mind racing with questions. Who? Why? How? Clearly there's no blood. But it's not like the Eye powers Jon has can actually physically harm anyone.

Can they?

God, Jon seems so distant right now. So adrift. Martin wants to hug him, but he doesn't dare interrupt the trip home. The two of them need to be behind closed doors. "...What--- what happened?"

"I went to have an interview with a man about John Rambo. We've been friendly, but he's a troubled man, so I... thought it seemed pertinent, to try to learn about the things that happened to him, from someone who was there."

Jon speaks quiet, slow, and recounts the situation slowly yet clearly as he's able. He doesn't know if something about the format just comes naturally to him, but, so long ago, it'd finally let him discuss the childhood incident that haunted him even still. It was worth trying now, with how the incident still wracks his mind, leaving him feeling as though he's lost at sea.

At least giving a statement makes the walk feel like it goes faster.

"He was a sheriff, from Hope, Washington, in the United States. A small town, just a pocket of civilization in between the mountains. Though the war did most of it's damage directly to John Rambo, this man... cemented it. He was an overzealous man, flying into a tangent the second I spoke with him. He backhandedly insulted me the second we started to speak, but I didn't chalk it up to much more than bravado. American police are prone to it. What I hadn't expected was for him to so earnestly believe I would agree with him. I could have told him to fuck off, or to decide that it wasn't worth my time, but...

"I wanted to hear him admit it was wrong. It wouldn't have done any good, he'll only be here for two weeks, but... I wanted him to tear apart his own reasoning, and realize that he'd been hurting people. To possibly take a piece of that back with him, or if nothing else, get him to stop saying these things, once he's realized they were wrong. When he admitted to these abuses, these sick exertions of power, and justified them, I was... angry. Disgusted. I couldn't understand how someone couldn't see how horrific that is. For a time, I continued to pull it out of him, certain that, if he looked the reality of what he and his men had done directly, it couldn't be denied any longer. I wanted him to see it and know what he had truly done. I wanted him to see it."

Jon's haze clears in a flicker of outrage, but it sinks back just as quickly as it'd come. He looks worse for it.

"I was so caught up in my anger, I only came back to myself when I noticed him beginning to wheeze. I had been cutting him off with a new compulsion before he could even so much as breathe for a moment. I should have relented, and I should have left it at that. There is no part of him that will ever truly understand what he's done. But I was... I somehow felt both so very clear, and so far away from myself. I saw him struggling, while he still defended himself. Even while he was choking, he was still defending himself. A-and that made me... furious. Furious in a way that I don't think I've ever been in all my life. I thought of all the people who, with this outlook of his, he's hurt, and hadn't been able to escape from it. How many people endured this, and couldn't fight back? How many tried, and didn't live--- and even if they had, what retribution would they have seen to the people who hurt them so irreparably?

"...I made him say it. I made him say exactly what he wanted to do, without defending himself, until he had no breath left of which to speak it. I made him confess those wishes of death, and glory, and bloodshed, his until his lungs finally collapsed beneath the pressure."

Martin... listens quietly to the admission. It's a sordid tale, certainly not one that lends itself to Jon feeling any better about his monster complex. And it's, admittedly, pretty terrifying. The idea of watching someone talk themself literally to death, that--- couldn't have been easy, or fast. But at the same time, well. Martin doesn't know John Rambo personally, but he knows him as a friend of Laios's. And in the past two years, Martin has seen first hand how appallingly bad the UK police can get, let alone the notoriously brutal American police. Someone that abusive, someone that violent, that cruel... Is Jon really wrong for doing that?

Martin does not like the part of himself that thinks this way. But he also can't justify feeling bad for the man Jon killed.

Christ. Jon actually killed someone.

All of this is entirely too much to process right now, so sitting with this information will very much need to be a project for Later Martin. Right Now Martin needs to get his boyfriend home, and to be a safe space for him.

"That's... a lot. I can see why it's causing you such stress," Martin says softly, rubbing Jon's hand with his thumb. "I don't... I don't want to tell you whether you were right or wrong to do that. I don't think it's my place. But I understand. Without condoning, or condemning, I understand. And I think going home was the right call."

[personal profile] apocryphalarchivist 2024-09-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you," Jon's voice is small, and hushed. He couldn't ask Martin for anything else. The lack of condemnation comes as both a relief and as something that weighs upon his conscience in it's own strange way, but condoning would have been much the same, he thinks. At least he understands - especially at a time when Jon, himself, barely feels as though he understands.

Thank goodness home is close, by this point.

He's extremely reluctant when he turns Martin's hand loose to get the house-keys out of his pocket, but as he does, he tries to find it in him to continue to speak, shoving past this oppressive weight on his chest any way he's able to.

"...How did your visits go?"

"Hah. They didn't. I met with Sasha, but that was more of a reunion than anything, and then I ran into Peter. I talked to Tim, but he was being---- Tim. Maybe I'll have better luck another time." Martin sighs softly, reaching up to rub Jon's back a little. Just to keep contact.

"I hope so. I've still got to try speaking with Tim. I'm... not looking forward to it, I'll be honest." Jon grimaces lightly, but finally gets the door open, holding it for Martin. "Haven't run into Peter yet, either, but I've got some choice words for him, when I do."

"Wish that surprised me at all, but it doesn't," Jon gripes, closing the door behind them. When he finally does, the tension held in his shoulders sinks at last, and his expression turns half-sour, half-dismayed. "Fucking Visitor's Center."

"I think so." Jon frowns, and out of habit, leans into Martin's arm. He could really use the affection right now, even if he doesn't feel particularly like he's earned it. "I think... it's spreading our secrets around. Turning us against each other, sowing distrust. You have no way of knowing who knows what about your past."

"...I don't really think anyone's spoken to my mother, at least," Martin says softly. "But I do worry about Peter."

With a sigh, he turns to Jon and presses a kiss to his temple.

Jon leans into the kiss, but his shoulders sink a bit further. They were bound to have to talk about it eventually. Shame it has to be with all of this in it's wake.

"...I, ah. I did... speak with your mother, for a short while."
