Don't You Want...

Who: "Slasher Face" Jean and YOU
What: Catch-All & Founding CR! Come get your nugget
When: Early <-> Mid August
Where: Places, mayhaps even locations (check prompts)
Warnings: Jean's out of a cyberpunk horror setting and they think everything in it is Normal so, y'know, casually horrifying shit coming out of their mouth including but not limited to violence, death, organ theft (no really), descriptions or potentially memory shares of mental attacks, and the most brutal corporate exploitation you could ever ask for.

Zwei Association [Around Town]

Here's the thing about Jean: they like people. Here's the other thing about Jean: they don't know that. It's not that they think of themselves as disliking people, exactly, it's that they think they've adopted the City's cool detachment to keep you from Getting Hurt, and, well, they haven't. Y'all might have noticed. But the handy thing about liking people is they've got a pretty good eye for who, like them, does not belong here. The clients have little habits and cultural signs, things they just subconsciously or conspicuously do that the other hires don't, to say nothing of the easy asks like that giant dude in the diving suit.

When you're not actively working at your job you may find yourself approached by Jean, notebook in hand, toothy smile on their face. They explain that they're looking to organize information on the available 'talent pool' to provide to one 'Madam Princess Zelda', both to coordinate information gathered on the task here and in case of emergency ("Disaster planning is good planning!"). Are you willing to talk?

Shi Association [Shops]

After collapsing during the initial festival planning, Jean is trying to take breaks. They are not good at this, but they're better than they were by main force of imagining what their old supervisor would say to their internal complaints about being tired or overworked. Thank the god of your choice that said former supervisor was a good and caring person. Increasingly, those breaks drift towards the various shops. Jean is a window shopper, is the problem. Some of it is just that the technology here is unfamiliar in ways that can be unhelpful, just off what they're expecting enough to cause a problem (to wit: they've never made coffee without a coffee machine, leading to frowning worry outside the general store trying to figure out which of these things Makes The Fucking Coffee, How), but the tailor might be Jean at their most anxious. They're still in the outfit they arrived in, carefully washed every single day, and they really would like to fix this...

...But something about what they're looking at doesn't sit right with them, and it's making them miserable.

Liu Association [Night]

There's an injunction not to be outside at night. Jean wants to know why, and unfortunately for the mods reading this narration that might mean getting a bunch of annoying questions. For the first few nights they stay up observing the streets of the town through their window and noting anything they can observe, though their shit-ass night vision soon indicates to them that this will need to be hands-on.

If you're interested, your character may have been asked to be a lookout for the next phase: Jean, clad in her siren Page and smeared with smoke, leaves, and soil to blend into the colors of night on the town, lurks behind cover after dark, gently flexing her claws. The people here live in fear of these things, and Jean has been hired to lift that fear from them, show them that wins are possible, that being under Jean's aegis places them beside her and not beneath her.

Madam Princess Zelda said Jean had a hard life, and thinking about that still hurts Jean in ways she can't quite define to herself. But if that's true, there's still, hahaha, a silver lining. The beasts of this place are used to frightened and helpless prey, but that's not Jean.

She's a monster too.

After a polite nod in return, the woman leans forward to peruse the notebook, eyebrows creeping progressively up her face as her gaze tracks across the meticulous self-report. “You’ve certainly gotten around,” she says, tone almost neutral. “You still didn’t say what ‘this matter’ is, though.”

The woman’s posture relaxes just a hair, obviously seeing this as a reasonable proposal with a questionable delivery. She smooths a hand along the side of her hair, crossing her legs more demurely. “That sounds pretty damn helpful.” In a friendly tone, she adds, “And did you say the mayor’s office was setting this up?”

“I see.” One finger taps briefly on the cover of her notebook. “Well, I don’t know how much of a resource I’d be in a situation like that, but I’m Grace Holloway. I’ve been employed as an entertainer here.”

“It takes all kinds,” Grace says magnanimously. “And thank you very much, Agent Jean. I’m real fond of my name.” She smiles, her face going round and warm. “I think it suits me, wouldn’t you say?”

[Internal thoughts]This “Agent Jean” seems well-meaning, but Grace has never once met a fellow working as a tough that‘d write out all their qualifications on a résumé like that. They certainly don’t seem like a local. Is that normal where Agent Jean comes from? Are they just turning over some excessively-honest new leaf?

Grace blinks down at Agent Jean, one eyebrow ticking up for a moment before her expression smooths back out to placid. “I wouldn’t be so sure about that part,” she says mildly. “Seems to me like they’ve done a damn good job so far turning self-sufficient. Though, I guess I haven’t been around here for long. What’d’you figure the isle’s missing?”

[Internal thoughts]If anyone knows about keeping an impoverished, sickly, isolated community running for years with no hope of resupply, it’s Grace Holloway. This isle has ample atmosphere, no danger of sudden decompression, and fresh water right on site. She hadn’t even realized some folks might think they’re in dire straits for materials.

After a beat of silence, a laugh bursts from Grace’s lips — apparently involuntarily, because she immediately cups a hand over her mouth, her face working to control her amusement. “Sorry — sorry, excuse me. Khm.” She removes her hand, her grin mostly dampened. “Honey, please don’t take this the wrong way, but have you never lived outside a city before?”

“Huh.” Grace takes a moment for that to sink in. “Six billion people, all in one city…” No wonder Agent Jean is thinking that way.

Shaking the thought off for now, she smiles at them again, trying to soften her response. “Well, unless I’m real mistaken, this isle has a lot fewer than six billion people. It’s got fresh air, fresh water, animals and plants that’re good to eat, people who know how to farm, a whole mine…

Grace shakes her head. “Honey, I think there’s a good reason Mayor Poe’s worried about running out of people more than she’s worried about running out of things. Taking your mine example, so long as you’ve got the know-how, you can re-use metal… pretty much forever. I suppose you might lose a tiny bit,” she adds indulgently, “but I’m thinking this place’ll have more to worry about by that time, in a couple hundred years, and there’re ways to pull metal out of mine tailings.” She ticks off more items on her fingers. “Trees grow back, and they don’t like being crowded, so a good arborist or two will keep everyone with a steady stream of lumber. Copper’s a commodity, and a damn useful one at that, so you’re gonna have an out-take of copper because folks are using it to make things long before you gotta worry about deflation…”

Clearly realizing she’s gone on a tangent, Grace clears her throat. “Well. I’m sure other people would know about the situation here better than I would. But I can’t say I’m seeing anything to worry about with regards to any of what you mentioned. It’s good of you to be proactive, though,” she adds encouragingly.

Grace realizing she just got nerd-sniped

Grace takes the shred of paper — and closes her eyes for a moment with an abruptly chagrined expression, evidently just remembering something. “…Right, of course.” She squints down at the address. “… When you say ‘princess’, that means the princess of somewhere else, right? Or is it a stage name?”

“Mmn.” Grace’s eyes narrow at the address. If she’s not mistaken, this is one of those seaside cottages where most of the fisherfolk live. What’s a purported princess doing as a fishlass? “Can’t say I’ve met her so far.” She looks up and smiles. “Tell her to come to one of my performances. I’ll be sure to have time after one of those.”

Grace’s smile widens. “Just tell folks you know to show up on performance nights, and I’ll be pleased as anything,” she says, slyly humorous. The slip of paper, she folds up and pins inside her notebook. “You take care now, alright?”

What a strange young person. Grace makes a mental note to keep an eye out for anything unsavory.
