WELCOME POTLUCK

Greetings, residents! Those more observant sorts among you may have noticed a large influx of very crowded ferries. In order to welcome our new residents en masse, Town Hall is holding a potluck in Town Square. Please bring a dish if you are able and make a new friend!

All of our newest arrivals need only bring themselves. We look forward to welcoming you all into our community, and may your lanterns always be lit.

This event is open to all! In light of our new influx of prospective players following the Great Sail Migration, we've decided to offer a small public event to tide everyone over until the TDM this weekend.

“… Oh! Hello.” Mulcahy bows his head slightly in greeting. “I, ah… you may have, if you were on the same ship as the other refugees. I was among them, although I admittedly made myself a bit scarce.”

"Oh. Oh yes! I remember now! He saw you. Or, er, I saw you? It's all very confusing. You see, I don't believe all of me has quite made it here yet. Or it has, but it's still growing. I don't quite even understand who I am right now. Exciting, isn't it?"

Blinks.

“Well as long as it’s exciting, then that’s just lovely! Although—er, you’ll have to forgive me if I’m a bit slow to understand you right now. This has all been quite an adjustment, you understand, er…?”

Right, names. Names are a thing that aren’t indicated on badges.

“I’m Father Mulcahy. I’m a priest.” He holds a hand out to shake. “May I have your name?”

"Theodor! Theodor Gorlash! At least, that's the name I have right now. Not sure if it's mine. A priest, though, you say? Who do you serve? Talos? Julianos? Ooh, ooh, are you a priest of Akatosh? Actually, that could be a good thing or a bad thing."

"I serve the Lord Jesus Christ. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with any of those other names; they don't exist where I'm from. I suspect you haven't heard of Christ, either."

Not to worry; he's way past the point of trying to convert anybody. "It's lovely to meet you, Gorlash."

"Oh, I've heard of that spirit. Never met a priest of him, though. Splendid to make your acquaintance. Actually, I'd like to know, are you one of those 'shepherd the lost' sorts of priests? Because I've lost some pieces of myself and I'm looking for help finding them and guiding them back to myself."

“Oh! But you’ve heard of Him!” Well, that’s plenty for Mulcahy.

“And yes, I am. Firstly it is my duty to shepherd those lost from the light of the Lord back into His flock, but I don’t see why I can’t do the same for anything that’s strayed from where it’s supposed to be.”

A beat. “Ah… well, pieces of a self might be a little beyond me. Is there anything specific I should be looking for?”

"Well, that would require me to know who I am. Though I have run into a butterfly or two here that certainly feel familiar. Oh, and I can vaguely recall being screamed at by mushrooms. Not here, though. Though perhaps that's just because I haven't met those mushrooms yet."

“… Oh!” Something seems to click. “Sir, are you a spirit of some sort? I’m sorry, I hadn’t noticed. Although I believe you’re certainly in good company.”

Given how the island is apparently haunted and all.

“Perhaps. I’ve never heard of a spirit named Theodor Gorlash, but I did just pick that name up off the ground, so it might not be my own. I feel it’s more likely that I’m a spirit than not.”

"Well, I'll certainly keep an eye out for any creatures that seem particularly out of place. Butterflies and mushrooms, did you say...? Is that all?"

"Well, I can't say for certain that that's all, but those are the ones I know. But again, if I knew what I was looking for, I'd be out there looking. I do appreciate the help, however. And I'll let you know when I figure out if I am a spirit and what sort of spirit I am."

“Hmm…”

How to do this? “I suppose if I should find anything particularly out of the ordinary, I’ll catch it. And then if I bring them to you, if any of them are yours, will you be able to tell?”

"Well, I would hope so. Though I can't make any promises."

He laughs.

"Sometimes they have the good courtesy to tell me if they're mine or not. Especially the little winged ones."

“Oh, well, that’s good! And if the mushrooms are proving difficult to identify, then perhaps by their roots, we shall know them.”

Mulcahy laughs, entirely too pleased with himself.

"Now, now, no need to go rooting around for hyphae, I say. If they're that snuggled down in the ground, they aren't ready to be found. You wait for the caps to emerge, and then by their fruits you shall know them!"

He gives Mulcahy a sly smile without actually being entirely sure why he's smiling slyly.
