Mingle - Emergency Potluck
Pumpkin Hollow Community Bulletin
WELCOME POTLUCK
Greetings, residents! Those more observant sorts among you may have noticed a large influx of very crowded ferries. In order to welcome our new residents en masse, Town Hall is holding a potluck in Town Square. Please bring a dish if you are able and make a new friend!
All of our newest arrivals need only bring themselves. We look forward to welcoming you all into our community, and may your lanterns always be lit.
This event is open to all! In light of our new influx of prospective players following the Great Sail Migration, we've decided to offer a small public event to tide everyone over until the TDM this weekend.

RWBY v8-9 spoilers from here on out
I never should have been one at all, is what she thinks, and even as she thinks it she's not sure if it's more because she wishes she was free of it or because of how bad at it she turned out to be. Jaune was right. It was her plan, so it was her fault; if she hadn't made such a stupid plan then Penny wouldn't be dead, and Atlas wouldn't have fallen, and Salem wouldn't have two relics, and they wouldn't even be in the Ever After and— and—
Ruby shakes, but she doesn't cry. She still doesn't cry. She just wraps her arms around Erin and buries her face in her shoulder, staring numbly across to the shroud of black feathers that block out the outside world.
"It— it was only a few days. I think."
It all blurs together. No sleep. No rest. Just one crisis after another after another after—

And Spring sayeth: Welcome back.
Erin's Mantle flowers in its glory, wrapping the two of them in its embrace; sex and lavender, gunpowder and charcoal, dew on the grass and the wind through the leaves. As it does, in a single moment Ruby gets the gift she won't give herself: rest, as if she'd had an entire day to sit down and heal, to eat and drink, and not worry.
The first gift of Spring's renewal.

Ruby isn't actually sure when the last time she slept was. Days, at least. She remembers lying in Jaune's hut, listening to the others' even breathing as they finally got the rest that was denied to them as Salem's forces raged through the kingdom, but her eyes never closed.
Spring washes over her and it's that, the feeling of that intangible embrace and the energy coming back to her, that almost makes her crack. But she breathes in through her nose, and out through her mouth, and as the shaking subsides her eyes stay dry.
"...thank you. I-It was kind of a long few days. Um. Atlas is— is gone, I think. Just. It's just gone."

"Liz Malloy blamed her victims, and the worst part of that is they would believe her."

She understands the point. She understands that Erin is trying to get her to not blame herself, but—
"We still failed. I-I had— it was my plan, and it didn't work, it—"
What about you?! It's ALL about you!
"—it just made things worse. I-I can't just pretend that's not true."

Ruby was always insistent on going back to Remnant.
"I'm not leaving again."
cw: reference to suicide
At what number does the death toll outweigh the value of a lesson learned? she thinks. How many people in Atlas died? How many people lost their homes? How is Remnant ever going to survive after this, when the technological capital of the world has been reduced to debris in a crater?
How is she supposed to tell Erin that she didn't even die in combat, but with a cup of tea in her hand and no more will to live?
Despite it all she wants to thank Erin, wants to appreciate the sentiment at hand, but the guilt chokes her, and for a while all she can do is to cling tighter and hope that says it for her.
"...we'd have to get out of the Ever After first. Do— do you remember that book I got, back on the ship? The one with the gold plate on the front, with the tree carving I made you feel. Turns out that place is real." She laughs, a little emptily. "I-I shouldn't even be surprised, at this point; all our fairytales seem to be..."

cw: reference to psychological torture
Despite it all, Ruby does almost laugh as she shakes her head, "Most of the Afterans are peaceful. Most of our problems came from uh— this. This cat. And um. Neo, she was back. She..."
A table full of the false faces of the dead. All of her worst fears about herself spoken from the mouths of people she'd failed to save. The girl she loves and loses over and over again reduced to a puppet on a string once more. The man that doomed her morphed into the innocent boy that deserves so much better, bleeding on the ground because of her. Illusions, lies, and yet all too real.
"...really hates me."
