WELCOME POTLUCK

Greetings, residents! Those more observant sorts among you may have noticed a large influx of very crowded ferries. In order to welcome our new residents en masse, Town Hall is holding a potluck in Town Square. Please bring a dish if you are able and make a new friend!

All of our newest arrivals need only bring themselves. We look forward to welcoming you all into our community, and may your lanterns always be lit.

This event is open to all! In light of our new influx of prospective players following the Great Sail Migration, we've decided to offer a small public event to tide everyone over until the TDM this weekend.

Chris looks at her for a moment, then raises their right hand with middle finger aloft and says, "Well that's one occupied at the moment."

"What do you want, Vika?" Chrid snaps, in no mood for stupid word games with her.

They're still angry, but if she truly does need help with something important, Chris might assist. Or at least suggest someone who can.

"A hand. Oh, wait. Um. A literal hand. Holding out that one of these people here can, I dunno, discorporate or reproduce by budding or something. Trying to do what I can to help with the new shell project so it's easier on Bart and First Aid..."

"Seems like something my father might do, so no. Not unless I find myself a real freak anyway."

(Oh the temptation to find a meat cleaver and turn it upon themself... only... that would upset First Aid. And Erik. And likely everyone else at the potluck. Going with only one hand for the time it would take everyone to calm the fuck down, and for Bart and Aidie to do the study that they require, would also be a hassle. And yet.)

The bitterness is suppressed and doesn't show in Chris's voice with the next question. They sound only calm, perhaps curious,

"Do you understand why that makes it worse in a way?" That all the harm was done without thought for who it would affect, that she couldn't control the impulse to lash out...

"I do. I've said before that if I'm gonna hurt people I'd rather it be on purpose. Hurting them on accident is a fucking insult."

Well, that's better than nothing. And Chris knows that Vika will never be a pacifist like First Aid anyway.

"I'm going to tell you what I told First Aid: the next time you two get into a scrap, I'm hitting you both with the length of pipe I've been saving in case his creator shows up."

"Yeah, fair enough. And I'll tell you what I told First Aid: I don't want to lose you as a friend either."

Chris looks away, and their voice is very soft. "I just... feel so helpless sometimes. I keep getting reminded that I can't protect anyone."
