WELCOME POTLUCK

Greetings, residents! Those more observant sorts among you may have noticed a large influx of very crowded ferries. In order to welcome our new residents en masse, Town Hall is holding a potluck in Town Square. Please bring a dish if you are able and make a new friend!

All of our newest arrivals need only bring themselves. We look forward to welcoming you all into our community, and may your lanterns always be lit.

This event is open to all! In light of our new influx of prospective players following the Great Sail Migration, we've decided to offer a small public event to tide everyone over until the TDM this weekend.

"Everyone has been kind so far, quite the contrast to where I came from. I do have to say that it's very nice to have more room to roam, and to be around growing things again."

Living things too, like the horses.

"I was never much for nature at home. I was always a car guy... built my own soapbox racer as a kid." (Never got to race it, but that's an overprotective mother for you...) Eddie looks thoughtful, "But now, having spent so many months working the soil? I would miss growing things myself. Was it... did you come here from your home, or somewhere else?"

Valdis shakes her head. "I came from an artificial realm created by the wish of an abused child, before that...I had a home of my own."

But no friends, or family, she didn't even use her own name, simply living one lie after another. Such is the fate of an immortal.

"So it's very nice to be somewhere real again."

"Huh," Eddie exhales thoughtfully at her description, and comments, "Very 'Twilight Zone'."

"I'm glad you've gotten out of that place. Even if we can't leave the island, at least it's... like you said, real. A place you could build a life, if you wanted to."

"I suppose you could say that."

Here is better in so many ways, especially now that Max has returned to her.

"Why did a car guy choose to become a farmer?"

Eddie grins, but also scratches at the back of his neck with one hand, looking sheepish. "No cars on the island. But also, not a lot of farmers stayed here... lots of families left before the barrier went up.

He drops his hand, and gives a shrug. "With new people coming along so frequently, they needed help with food production. We suffered this winter because we didn't have enough farmers earlier in the year, too."

Yeah, no cars would make that particular hobby fairly difficult. Valdis inclines her head.

"Makes sense." She continues to stroke the horse, who seems to be losing interest now that she's out of bread. "I'm still trying to decide what to do. Currently an enforcer, but I don't know if that's really me anymore."

"The good thing about this place is you can always change your mind if a job doesn't fit. Angel used to be on the fire brigade and lived here in town, which made things a bit difficult, you know, for seeing each other. But then he decided to come live and work on the farm with me, and..." Eddie smiles, "He's putting together his own beehives for when spring really gets going. It makes him happy."

And Angel being happy clearly makes his partner Eddie happy.

"I suppose it's better than uprooting your entire life and identity to go somewhere new."

Valdis offers another smile.

"That sounds lovely, I'm glad you have both found happiness. So many I once knew have been deprived of it."

"Then, perhaps... you can seek your happiness in honor of those who weren't able to."

She smiles and shakes her head.

"I was not designed to find happiness, but perhaps I shall still rebel against my creator to do so. After all, this place has offered me another chance, hasn't it."

Eddie's expression goes solemn.

"My mother would absolutely hate that I'm living with someone she'd perceive as another man. But she's not the one who gets to live my life. And your creator isn't the one who lives your life. You are." There's a little flicker of a smile, to gentle his words.

"I say, take this new chance and run with it."

His words are so kind considering he's only met her moments ago. Everyone here has shown kindness, a stark contrast to where she last came from. Perhaps the people here are simply more united by default, having been given the choice to come. Valdis shakes her head again.

"Oh, don't worry about me, Eddie." She says softly. "Someday I will look my creator in the eyes and tell him just how I decided to live the life he took from me. Then I will take his." She reaches up to stroke the horse again, looking away from him. "Until then, I plan to live as best I can."

There's a moment of hesitation when Valdis mentions taking her creator's life, but Eddie decides that it's not his place to judge.

He nods.

"Good. The best revenge is living well."

She'd wondered how this man would respond to her words, and she notes the hesitation. Eddie's words aren't exactly careful, but they are at least an attempt to refrain from judgement.

"It usually is. Luckily I think I will be more successful here than the last place."
