Whitlock Needleworks sits in the heart of Downtown Hollow, and mid-February a sign shows up in the window: NOW TAKING MERRYMEET ORDERS. Clearly, the new seamstress has noticed the opportunity to serve the masses, locals and offworlders alike.

"Oh! I've met her. She likes jewel tones. Do you know what she's planning on wearing for Merrymeet?"

Annabel blossoms into an easy smile, imagining Cesar beside Magne.

"I don't know the exactly dress—that's a surprise—but I have a swatch here." César's smile returns closer to his normal self as he walks up and pulls a green fabric swatch out of his pocket. "I want to make sure I compliment her dress without overpowering it. I don't want to outshine her."

"Somewhere green..." Annabel laughs warmly when she sees the color. "So you could do a black suit with a cummerbund or necktie to match the dress, so you go together. Pocket square, too, maybe in a pattern containing the green, but not wholly comprised of it."

Oh, a reference to another conversation. Ha!

"I was thinking black suit, necktie, and pocket square. But... It'd be nice to have a vest for under the suit, too. We talked about that in our very first conversation, and she'd get a kick out of it. Would that be too elaborate?"

"Not in the least. I will need your measurements, though, so start undressing."

Or at least take off the coat and let her at you. Annabel is already grabbing a measuring tape and her notebook.

"What, here in the middle of the shop?" César laughs, looking relieved he'll get his vest after all, but he does get out of his boots and coat to start. "I'm thinner than I usually am, just to be warned. I'd like to at least be able to wear the vest once I get that back in the summer again. Noooot sure if it's possible, but if it is...."

"So, perhaps a waistcoat with a cinch in the back, that'll be tighter now but has room to expand? That or..." She looks thoughtful. "Well, there's a few different ways to adjust the fit of a garment, isn't there?"

[pineapplesalmon]

"Honestly, I'd get a serious kick out of having a waistcoat." Then, César mock whispers, grin splitting wide. "I'm Magne's boyfriend now."

"Are you now?" Annabel begins to measure, starting with the neck, and it's with a deliberate jerking motion that she pulls the tape taut.

"You had better treat that young lady right, then. I'll dress you well enough, you just make her feel like the the belle of the ball, even if she doesn't win Flower Queen."

And then she smiles so brightly, loosening the tension like it wasn't even there.

César lets out a bit of a gasp of surprise, jerking for a moment before his brain catches up with the teasing. Then he laughs. Surprisingly, that brightens his spirits.

"Oh, I intend to. She's amazing. Which is why that's shovel talk number 2 I've gotten so far. I expect at least a few more." César continues to smile bright. "This is going to mean more to her than she realizes, so anything you can do to make it special for her...."

"Well, the other option I was considering for making it adjustable was a corseted back and some boning. It'll be a bit more work, but I think she'll appreciate the effort. And no one will have better posture than you."

[pineapplesalmon]

".... oh." César says quietly; that's a yes.

"Let me get the rest of your measurements and get my materials together. You'll need to come in for a fitting--say, Thursday?"

Ah, this is going to be good.

"I didn't think of the possibility of surprising Magne back. Just complimenting her." César grins wide again. "Just tell me whatever I need to take off, I guess. Thursday sounds excellent."
