“Oh.” Lucas considers that for a few moments. “Well, that’s fine, right? I think this place is going to need someone with a lot of experience. I have some but, only like…eight months, and not being a cop exactly, like I said.”

He drums his fingers on the desk. “So where are you from? I’m from Virginia myself.”

Really, Pal? I never would’ve guessed.

“Yeah? So what kinda experience?”

He perks up a bit at that. “No kidding. Me too! I’ve mostly been living in New Orleans, but Virginia’s my old stomping grounds.”

[woocas]

"More like, uh...investigation than busting people for stuff." He replies sheepishly.

Seeing Snakes get interested does fill Lucas with a flush of confidence, perking up too. "New Orleans? I've been there a few times. They really know how to eat down there! Whereabouts in Virginia? I'm from Farmville, but...most people never heard of it."

“Oh, yeah?” Snakes is a little surprised by that too. “So being hired to find out if wives are cheating and that kinda thing?”

Snakes smiles with pride. “Yeah, New Orleans is a great place. There’s not another like it.”

He nods to this. “I ain’t heard of it either. I’m from Richmond.”

"Uuuh, kinda? More like...if the dead guy was murdered or not." Which is the truth, just not all of it.

"Bet you were busy there." Lucas says with a lopsided grin. "Richmond's nice but the traffic is gnarly. Farmville's near the Appalachia's, little tiny college town, lotta furniture made there but that's about it really. I think pumpkin Hollow in its heyday might have been bigger than my home, to be honest."

“But you weren’t a cop, huh?” Interesting.

He smirks. “Your place must be really tiny. Yeah, Richmond’s a busy place. I cut out after the war, though. Wanted to try my luck elsewhere for a while.”

[woocas]

"No, not really." Lucas admits sheepishly again. "It's usually easier to say it's like being a cop but for...like. Ghosts."

he waits to see how Snakes will take that before asking about the war. Which war? There wasn't one going on when Lucas woke up here. Well, not one that the news gave any attention to, that is.

If Snakes was from the modern era, or knew of it, he’d make a Ghostbusters crack. As it is, he quirks an eyebrow.

“Yeah? I guess you like all the talk of spooky stuff here then.”

Snakes thinks anyone excited by it is more than a little off his rocker.

Well, it's not a total rebuke. Lucas breathes a sigh of relief.

"I mean, it's is interesting, but so is figuring out what's actually happening, you know? Why we're really here, what's causing the curse? That kind of thing." Frowning thoughtfully, Lucas blurts out the other question he had.

"Which war were you talking about?"

“Yeah, I’d like to know that myself,” Snakes grunts. “I wonder if it’s random who gets picked. Obviously not everybody does.”

He glances back. “The war between the states.”

[woocas]

"I mean, it could be random. We could survey the new folks and see if there's any common threads?"

Lucas blinks a few times. "Dude, the Civil War?"

"Yeah, that's a good idea," Snakes muses.

He glances back. "That's what they call it where you're from?"

[woocas]

"...Yeah, in the history books." Now Lucas can't help but wonder if Snakes is a ghost or not. He really can't tell the difference.

"That was like almost a hundred fifty years ago." Other people are from different worlds, but is Snakes from a different time? Now he's eager to find out!

"Yeah?" Snakes is intrigued now, but still cautious, not wanting to believe hook, line, and sinker right away. Still, he's definitely heard about things from others here that could indicate other time periods, if he wanted to entertain the thought.... "So what's the world like where you're from?"

[woocas]

"Well...it's a lot easier in some ways, and harder in others. The whole world went to war twice. Traveling by air was invented about fifty years after the civil war and then we went to the moon after that!" There's a bunch more and Lucas dives right into explaining everything he can think of unless Snakes stops him. Electricity, cars, phones, radio and tv, instant photographs, the invention of computers and the internet to having a phone that can do all of those things and more!

"But it also kinda means that people are busy all the time...so. Pros and cons yeah?"

Snakes isn't sure if he believes it at first, but by the end of the spiel he's sold, and sold hard.

"You know, I think I'd like your world better than goin' back to mine," he muses. "I wonder if that could be arranged when all's said and done."

[woocas]

"Well I figure there's no harm in asking, right? Assuming we actually manage to do what the mystery lady asked of us, that is."

He thinks a moment, "Speaking of which, what'd you think of all of that business?"

[worstorganplayer]

"Yeah. Assuming they give us any chance to ask."

He shook his head. "I dunno.... That was a lot to digest. I thought I was havin' some kinda hallucination, but I know I was dyin' or dead, and now I'm not, so there must be some truth to it. It's kinda pathetic they can't solve their own problems, though."

[woocas]

"Only one way we'll find out I guess."

Lucas nods along until the last part, then he frowns slightly. "I mean, it's kind of obvious that they can't. So, I guess someone's trying to pull some strings for this place and throw them a bone."

He sighs. "I would have signed up if they had asked, though."

[worstorganplayer]

"I don't see what makes outsiders any better at fixing things," Snakes says. "It's not like we've got any special powers." Or if any do, Snakes doesn't know it.

[woocas]

"Well...what if some of us did?" Lucas raises a brow. What would Snakes think of that?

[worstorganplayer]

"... Then that wouldn't explain the ones who don't," Snakes drawls. "I don't. I can't see as how I'll be anything useful in this sort of situation."

[woocas]

"You got your experience right? Whatever it was you did back home, the choices you made, that kind of thing?"

Lucas presses his lips together, thoughtfully considering before he continues. "I'd think even a new face around here is a welcome change. Can you imagine being stuck in the same place for five years? With the same people?"

[worstorganplayer]

"Yeah," Snakes says. "If any of that would really help in a mess like this. I never encountered supernatural stuff before."

He finally cracks a smirk at this. "Okay, sure, if you didn't really like the people, that'd be a big strain." And he doesn't like much of anyone. The thought of being trapped with Posey's gang for five years.... That'd truly be Hell.

"Well I have, between the two of us we might just make one entire Enforcer," Lucas snickers.

He didn't make a further comment, just because he'd got bonkers being stuck like that! What if that happens to them here?
