Actually, awkward might be underselling it. They might be in need of a brand new word to describe the sheer levels of awkward this is—maybe some German compound word, that'd probably do it. They've got to have a word for 'so you fucked your ex after arguing with your ex like you're living in a fanfic then spent months barely talking at work and now you're at a party with a friend as a date and have to talk like normal human beings', right?
...okay maybe just for the fucking your ex part.
Alice isn't entirely sure what Sam's making of the whole 'bringing Gerry as her date' thing, but she's caught enough glances from those familiar eyes to know he's making something of it. If that's jealousy (and she still finds it hard to believe that it is, even after the casino) then, well, maybe she'll let him stew in it for a bit. He can find out the truth if it comes up. Or if he talks to Gerry.
But for now it's just them.
"I've been stuffing my face with pastries and wine for like, an hour, so yeah, this is definitely my idea of fun," she answers with a laugh that's only half-awkward. "Still not sure what Gerry was thinking putting me up for this thing but hey, the party's nice. So uh— how've you been?"
