"The Covenant doesn't just fight like we do, they hit harder. Their technology outpaces ours in almost every way. We've been losing the war ever since the aliens decided to start it." She nods her head to the side, braid spilling over her shoulder. "But the likely grim fate of humanity in my universe probably isn't garden party talk."

Billions dead. Hundreds of colonies wiped out entirely—her own included. The war has always been rather one-sided; all humanity can do is return fire and claw back what few victories they can, while trying to keep the Covenant from finding the Sol system before they can find some magic bullet to turn the tide.

"The supplier definitely learned a lesson that day. I didn't get to read the news much from my cell but as far as I heard no one was on their side. Honestly, I don't know what the Project expected, hiring me because of those very charges, but..."

She shrugs a shoulder. In truth, they likely never intended to behave any shadier than the average ONI Spec Ops program, the kinds of things Connie would've been primed to ignore. But also, "Powerful people never think they're going to get caught."
