It would be easier to take Mortanne for her word if Valdis didn't constantly feel that the goddesses and their followers kept dismissing the pain she went through, as if her mistrust were silly. Even if her empathy picks up only concern and care from the goddess of death, it is so counter to the shape of the words, that she wants nothing more than to reject it again. The only empathy the goddess expresses with words is for her current worshipper, Degas.
