She points at him, beaming. "Got it in one. They hid it with games. The story goes, they'd have one guy keeping watch while everybody was learning, and if he saw a soldier coming by on patrol, he'd give the warning. And everybody would be --" a swooping gesture, as though hastily clearing something off the table in front of her -- "away with the books, out with the spinny tops, and when the soldier looked in he wouldn't see an illegal study hall, he'd see a perfectly respectable gambling den."

There's some laughter at that, and she grins.
