Well, it is somewhat proven that shocking someone out of their grief can create enough of a buffer to introduce a new idea that might soften the rest.

Case in point: Bart sits up and offers Artemy a brighter smile, then pulls his bag up from his side and pulls out a book that's stuffed full of extra pages of notes, drawings, some pressed plants whose stems protrude here and there. He carefully offers it to show a myriad of sketches of the wildlife around the island here, copious notes, folded hand-drawn maps that aren't particularly to-scale but at least mark out landmarks adequately enough to be followed. He would let Artemy flip through all of his notes while he spoke.

"Oh that's not a problem at all, Doctor Watson is also pre-moon landing and I've been helping him slowly get up to speed on more appropriate medical practices. If you would like, I've got a lot more notes like this back at home, I only have this one with me because it hasn't yet been filled. I can bring them to you to be copied or just read, and you can certainly supplement with material from the library. It was absolutely necessary when I first arrived to be able to get a good handle on what the state of medicine and general biological study was here.

"So, xeno- as a prefix actually dates back to late Latin texts and later incorporated into Greek meaning 'foreign' or 'stranger' as a way to designate someone from other countries or continents. The concept of 'xenophobia' applies to meeting others that don't fit your standard understanding of people. A man that looks like you might be afraid of a man that looks like me for the sheer fact that I don't look like you. But when applied to biology, it tends to be more about lifeforms that originated somewhere other than the planet that you're familiar with. That was my area of expertise."
