The eight years is just what he can talk about in public, the hundred before that he has to keep private. That's where the real pain lies.

"I've never been very good at describing the shape of someone. The closer they are the less I know what to say, there's too much. The details overwhelm."

He turns the porcelain over in his hands, he'll need a way to explain it, preferably before he's asked, because he can't tell her that it reminds him of Gilbert's Mien and he doesn't want to have to come up with the lie too quickly.

Then again... Maybe he can.

"Beautiful curly hair, and almost ageless. In the right light he'd put you in mind of the porcelain figure in a music box." The 'right light' being, of course, 'without the Mask in the way', "And always very secretive, I don't know that he'd like the idea that I'd been talking about him without his knowing who I'd been talking to."
