The familiar copper tang of blood hangs heavy in the air. A few seconds delayed, he realizes he'd heard the thud of her body hitting the ground. Snap out of it. Snap out of it!
He forces his eyes back open, and tilts his chin down when he can't make them look down on their own. There, just on his periphery, he can see her small form crumpled in the dirt. Only then does the full weight of it finally crash down upon him.
Pain zings up his legs as his knees hit the ground. His bloody hand trembles so hard it becomes a red blur and he reaches for her body, to drag it close and cradle her. With a croaking voice, he pleads to the ghost of Daisy who must be watching. "I'm sorry. I had to. Please, forgive me. I had to. I'm so sorry."
